Rhythm of Art

Featuring an interactive reproduction of jazz artist Romare Bearden’s Three Musicians, this teaching gallery invites visitors to explore artistic and musical improvisation as a way of creating and seeing art. Activity stations allow visitors to improvise with basic forms and colors while listening to a jazz score created by the music department at VMFA’s partner, Virginia Commonwealth University. Other interactive exhibits explore visual forms transcribed to audio, creating group collages, and simply drawing while listening to improvised sounds.

PRD collaborated closely with VMFA’s in-house education, design, and production staff to develop their innovative concept for this gallery. We helped ideate, visualize, and develop a wide range of graphic imagery and tactile interactives with production strategies that ensured every dollar of their limited budget translated into experience impact.
