More Perfect Union: The American Civil War Era

More Perfect Union: The American Civil War Era traces the roots of the Civil War to the nation’s start, when the United States was founded on freedom that depended on the enslavement of others. This paradox ultimately led to the bloodiest war our country has experienced. However, the exhibit raises important questions that go beyond the war: Have we formed a more perfect union? When did the Civil War era end?

Visitors explore the history of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, the American Civil War, Reconstruction, and beyond to answer these questions through nearly 1,000 objects, first-person stories, and 14 remarkable media programs, including a 65-foot, 180-degree theater experience.
