A “Military Gallery” was among the original museum exhibits in the Alabama Department of Archives and History’s “War Memorial Building” when it opened in 1940. In recognition of the centennial anniversary of WWI, a display reminiscent of the original was re-installed and has remained until recently, in part because of the difficulty accessing the cases.
PRD and ADAH modernized the interpretation and design of the gallery to bring it to an equal level with other ADAH exhibits, and to create a highly flexible space in which content, graphics, and artifacts are easily changeable with a consistent overarching design and infrastructure.
Alabamians hold deep connections to the military, sometimes spanning generations in a family. They include service in both combat and support roles, abroad and close to home. Documenting Alabamians’ service is a foundational part of the mission of the Department of Archives and History. In that tradition, Alabama Military Stories serves as a living memorial to the stories of service, community, and legacy found in Alabama’s military history.
